What is Balloon Sinuplasty?
Balloon Sinuplasty is a safe, minimally invasive procedure that opens up the sinuses, providing lasting relief to those suffering from chronic sinusitis.
What is chronic sinusitis?
Sinusitis is a common condition that is caused when the cavities of the sinuses become inflamed, normal drainage is blocked and mucus builds up. This can result in:
- nasal congestion
- throbbing facial pain and pressure
- thick, yellow or green discharge from the nose or down the back of the throat
- reduced sense of taste and smell
When these symptoms persist for more than 12 weeks, they are typically diagnosed as chronic sinusitis.
Chronic sinusitis can dramatically impact one’s quality of life. In addition to the symptoms above, many sufferers complain of frequent headaches, teeth pain, bad breath, irritability, fatigue and even nausea.
Why is Balloon Sinuplasty used to treat chronic sinusitis?
When sinusitis is diagnosed, the first course of treatment is medication—including nasal sprays, antibiotics and oral steroids. However, about 60% of patients find that medications alone are insufficient in treating their symptoms. With a 95% success rate, Balloon Sinuplasty has been shown to offer more effective, lasting relief to patients suffering from chronic sinusitis.
How does Balloon Sinuplasty work?
A balloon catheter is inserted into the inflamed sinus and slowly inflated, expanding the sinus opening. The infected sinus is then flushed with saline to remove the buildup of mucus. When the balloon catheter is removed, the sinus remains open, allowing normal drainage to resume and preventing future painful sinus pressure. Unlike with conventional sinus surgery, the original structure of the sinus cavity is left unaltered and intact.
Is Balloon Sinuplasty safe?
Yes. The rate of complications resulting from Balloon Sinuplasty is low. Most of the time, patients are able to return to their normal activities immediately. The procedure is less invasive than conventional sinus surgery and is usually performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia. In some cases, Iowa ENT Center, LLC physicians may even choose to treat patients in the office under local anesthesia.
As with any medical procedure, there are associated risks—including infection and tissue trauma. When considering Balloon Sinuplasty, discuss any concerns you may have with your ENT physician.
