SNORING & SLEEP APNEA

Snoring problems are more common among men and typically get worse with age. In addition to preventing snorers and their mates from getting a good night’s sleep, snoring can be a sign of a more serious condition called obstructive sleep apnea.

With sleep apnea, narrowing or collapse of the upper airway causes the snorer to actually quit breathing for more than 10 seconds at a time. That leads to lower amounts of oxygen in the blood, causing the heart to work harder. This may happen 30 to 300 times per night—causing disruption of the sleep cycle and making sufferers feel continually tired.

Untreated, sleep apnea increases the risk of strokes, heart attacks, diabetes and other serious conditions. That’s why it’s so critical to get a thorough evaluation, accurate diagnosis and effective treatment.
